Land Acknowledgement

The Durham Rowing Club is situated on the Treaty and traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation; A branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to a number of Indigenous nations and people. It is an honour to be welcomed on these lands in friendship and are privileged to row on the waters of Scugog.

As a club, we are humbled to recognize the many contributions made by the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples of Canada, and celebrate the historic foundation and contributions from the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation to our Township. We acknowledge this beautiful land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, and thank all the generations of people who have taken care of this land for millennia. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity provided by this special place we all share.

Most importantly, we remember the history that has been tainted by poor treatment through Colonialism and a lack of friendship with the First Nations, Metis and Inuit who call these lands home. This history is something we are all affected by as we are all treaty people in Canada. At the Durham Rowing Club, we strive to build our mindfulness through the process of truth and reconciliation. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. On the waters of Scugog, we row forward in love and peace as friends and allies.
